Sunday School: Prayer

Matthew 6:9, 11; 1 Thessalonians 5:17 (KJV)

Uncle Ricky: Well, hello there, little friends! Welcome to Sunday School on the porch. I’m Uncle Ricky. Levi came to visit today — and Olive, our dove, is already here, perched on the rail where she loves to sit. Say hello, you two!

Levi: Hi, everybody! I’m Levi. Uncle Ricky, I have a question that’s been rolling around in my head all morning.

Olive: And I’m Olive! Hello, friends! Levi’s been thinking so hard, I could almost hear it from my branch.

Uncle Ricky: Well, let’s hear it, young man. What’s rolling around in that head of yours?

Levi: What IS prayer, exactly? At church, everybody closes their eyes and the preacher talks a long, long time. Is that prayer? And can God hear me if I only whisper? Or if I don’t say anything out loud at all?

Uncle Ricky: Levi, those are fine questions — the very same kind Jesus’ own disciples asked Him! One day they said, “Lord, teach us to pray.” And Jesus was glad to teach them. So let’s learn it the way He taught it. Prayer, little friends, is simply talking to God — like you’d talk to your daddy — because God IS our Father. Listen to how Jesus began — Matthew chapter 6, verse 9: “Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.”

Olive: “Our Father”… so when we pray, we’re talking to our Father in heaven. That doesn’t sound scary at all, Uncle Ricky. It sounds… cozy.

Uncle Ricky: Cozy is a fine word for it, Olive. God loves to hear from His children — whispers and all, Levi. Even the prayers you only think in your heart and never say out loud. God hears every single one.

Levi: Whew! Okay, good. So what do we SAY when we pray? Are there… parts? Like a beginning and a middle?

Uncle Ricky: There are, son — Jesus’ prayer has a beautiful shape to it. First comes praise. That’s the “Hallowed be thy name” part. We tell God how great He is, and we thank Him for everything He’s given us. Before we ask for one single thing, we start with thank You.

Olive: Thank You first. I like that, Uncle Ricky. It’s polite — and it’s true, too, because He’s given us so much!

Uncle Ricky: That’s right, Olive. Then we ask Him for what we need. Jesus prayed, “Give us this day our daily bread.” Daily bread, Levi — that’s asking God for today’s needs. Food for today. Help for today. Courage for today.

Levi: Daily bread! I can remember that. It’s like saying, “God, here’s what I need TODAY” — not next year, not my whole birthday list. Just today.

Uncle Ricky: Exactly right, young man! And then comes one more part: we tell God we’re sorry for the wrong things we’ve done — and we forgive other people for the wrong things they’ve done to us. Being sorry and forgiving — those two travel together.

Olive: Uncle Ricky, can we pray for other people, too? Not just ourselves? Like… if Levi got sick, could I pray for him?

Uncle Ricky: Olive, that’s one of the finest things prayer can do. Praying for somebody else is a gift you can give anybody, any time — your mama, your daddy, a friend who’s sad, even somebody who hasn’t been kind. Some of the greatest prayers in the whole Bible are people praying for somebody else.

Levi: Okay. Last question, I promise. What if I pray and pray and pray… and nothing happens? Do I just stop?

Uncle Ricky: Oh, Levi — that’s the most important part of all. You don’t stop. The Bible says — First Thessalonians, chapter 5, verse 17 — just three little words: “Pray without ceasing.” That means keep on praying, keep on talking to God, all day long, about everything. Sometimes God’s answer is yes. Sometimes it’s “not yet.” But He always hears you — and He always loves hearing your voice.

Olive: So prayer isn’t just for church! It’s for the porch, and the kitchen, and bedtime…

Levi: And when I’m scared at night! I can talk to God right there in my bed. I don’t even have to whisper — I can just think it, and He hears me.

Uncle Ricky: That’s right, Levi. Anytime, anywhere, about anything. Now — shall we practice? Let’s pray together, right now. Father in heaven, thank You for loving us and for listening to us. Thank You for our food today, our families, and our friends. Forgive us when we do wrong, and help us to forgive others. Please watch over everybody we love. We ask it in Jesus’ name — amen.

Olive: Amen!

Levi: Amen! That was my very first porch prayer. I’m going to do that every single day.

Uncle Ricky: That’s our Sunday School lesson, little friends. Remember: God is your Father, and He loves to hear from you. So talk to Him every day — pray without ceasing!
