Wildfire Reported in Scott County as Fire Danger Grows Across Mississippi

Listen to this article:

Firefighters are battling wildfires across Mississippi — and one tracking site reports an active blaze right here in our coverage area, in Scott County.

The site, which monitors satellite fire detections, lists a “Young Pines 2” fire in Scott County as still active, with state forestry crews working to halt its spread. It reports no structural threats or evacuation orders. Be advised: we cannot confirm that this report is accurate.

What we can confirm is bad enough. This past weekend, six wildfires burned more than 58 acres in Copiah County, according to the Mississippi Forestry Commission — sparked by downed power lines, wind gusts, an ATV rollover, and debris burning. The largest tore through 55 acres of grass along Browns Wells Road, threatening structures. One fire reignited the next day.

Statewide, the Forestry Commission is getting 30 to 40 fire calls a day, and officials say nine out of ten fires are human-caused. More than 20 counties are under burn bans.

And Friday is the day to really watch: a Fire Weather Watch runs from 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM with gusts of 30 to 35 mph. Forecasters say it could be the most dangerous fire-weather day of the week.

Forestry officials are asking residents to hold off on any outdoor burning through the weekend, and to use extra caution with grills, cigarettes, and farm equipment. The Forestry Commission says anyone who sees a fire should call 911 immediately.
